The Lake District Hub which is a platform set up from the Corona Virus Crisis to help its growing number of members welcomes today's announcement in the House of Commons by prime minister Boris Johnson to allow the reopening of many sectors that have been heavily impacted as a result of closure of its economy for the past three and a half months. The Lake District and its surrounding area have seen its economy decimated during this time, with many businesses and jobs at risk as a result. With some areas of Cumbria seeing an increase of 400% in unemployment this news will come as welcome relief to many and not a moment too soon.
Gareth O'Rourke, Owner, Lake District Hub adds "The economy has taken a huge blow over the past three and a half months and many of our members were extremely worried about the ability to survive if they were unable to trade the summer season this year. Many of the businesses have been working hard behind the scenes to make sure that when the visitors do return, it's as safe as it can be for everyone to be able to enjoy the area and continue to make memories that last a life time"
Part of the work the Lake District Hub will be involved in is helping some key areas to make sure that those businesses who have already lost over 3 months of trade can survive beyond the summer season.
- Helping to increase the average number of days a visitor stays in the Lake District by giving visitors access to everything on offer in the Lake District
- Helping to increase bookings outside of the peak seasons for the Lake District.
- Helping to turn some of those day trippers into the Lake District into overnight stays and increase the overall average spend in this area
- To help raise awareness of all businesses within the local economy, so local people are using more local businesses which will help retain jobs within our area.
Gareth O'Rourke, Owner, Lake District Hub says "it isn't going to be easy to achieve all of this, it will need all organisations to work together and engage with each other, it will need businesses to all be onboard, but I am confident that our community can help reduce the impact this virus has on our area moving forward"
"We are also in a great position, with a low population density, which will make social distancing easier and help reassure visitors that the Lake District and surrounding areas will be some of the safest to spend your staycation at in the U.K."
